Some of the best living is spent behind bars. Solo, misty, morning rides. Coffee, cake, country roads. Rolling hills, flats or full on climbs.

The silence of the countryside only broken by the sound of the chain on the cassette, the wind in my ears and the tyres on the road.

If you want to follow the numbers more closely I’m on Strava as Rob Cummins Wheelworx or if you’re more of a pictures instead of reading type I post on Instagram as wheelworxrob.

There aren’t many people out this early at the weekend, for now the road is all mine. I haven’t been training for quite a while. I’m still riding somewhat regularly but without structure or with no greater purpose than getting to the coffee shop.

Because I’m riding alone I don’t have any real marker for my fitness. I try to fool myself that it feels like I’m riding well. But I know I’m not. I know that I’m not in great shape.

I want to be. I want that feeling of effortless power and strength and speed. But I also know the cost of it. Double sessions, fifteen plus hours a week, structured training, two hour runs and four and five hour rides.

Then I think that I don’t quite want it that much. Not yet. The desire is coming back and the sting of pride as I struggled on a climb when riding with a friend makes it a little stronger. But it’s not enough yet to get me out on the long rides.

Or out of the coffee shop every week.

Not yet anyway.
