Owen Martin raced Ironman Arizona last weekend and in the process qualified for his tenth Kona in ten years. Arizona was Owen’s third Ironman this year. His first race this year was Ironman Lanzarotte where he qualified for this years race in Kona, his second race was Kona in October and last weekends Ironman Arizona qualifies him for next years, 2019 Ironman World Championships.
Arizona has been Owen’s regular qualifying race for the last few years but he crashed heavily there in 2017 which was how he ended up racing at Lanza earlier this year. Owen’s consistency is quite incredible and to qualify for Kona twice this year is all the more impressive.

Kona Secrets: Lessons learned from over 50 Kona Qualifications.
Knowledge doesn’t produce results, action does. Just knowing how to do something doesn’t guarantee success, especially something as difficult as qualifying for Kona; you have to put in the hours. In this book I share some of the lessons I learnt between being a back-of-the-pack beginner to qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
Owen Martin – Ironman Arizona
- Swim: 1:05:09
- T1: 6:28
- Bike: 4:42:04
- T2: 3:49
- Run: 3:21:33
We had a number of other Irish athletes racing include Kona regular and bike fitter to the stars Ivan O’Gorman. Ivan missed qualifying by one place and less than two minutes. I’ve no doubt that we will see him line up again to take a slot for next years race.
