Kevin Gilleece on right, Rob Cummins on left

A little late this month with the Irish in Kona post so apologies to Kevin Gilleece who took a slot earlier this month at the very competitive Ironman Austria. Click on through for full details…

This is Kevin’s second time qualifying for the Ironman World Championships but despite taking his slot and travelling to Kona last time this will actually be his first time to toe the line. Kevin had an accident in the run up to his first Kona appearance and couldn’t actually start.

His qualifier in Austria saw him exit the water in 1:04:23 which had him a long way off the qualifying slots. He was only 85th in his age group at this stage but Kevin’s real weapon is his run and that was still a long way off.

He rode a solid 4:58 which got him all the way up to 27th in his age group. It is at this point that Kevin really comes into his own and ran all the way through to 7th in his age group with the third fastest run split, a blistering 3:02:09.

He was fortunate enough to then pick up a roll down slot at the awards ceremony the following day.

I’ve added Kevin to the updated page with all of the Irish athletes who have qualified so far. You can check that out here
