I’ve been debating what to say in this weeks blog. 3 sessions in a week does not a Kona qualifier make. Admitting I’m having problems feels like admitting to failure but something’s not right and hasn’t been for a quite some time. The training hasn’t been having the usual effect and I don’t seem to be getting the resulting gains in speed and fitness I normally do with the level of training I’ve been doing. It’s been gnawing away at the back of my head that something’s wrong but I kept on telling myself it would come good in time. I also kept on telling myself that it was just the training volume and load that had me constantly tired but I think there’s something more than that. I’m seeing a doctor next week and we will hopefully get some answers. Anyway Let’s get on with this weeks fairly short update.
This week I manage to hit 20 hours for the first time in a while and on Sunday I have a real breakthrough session, not just because of how well it went but also because of how quickly I recovered after it. After months of slogging through hard slow bike rides I’m starting to see results. Ironman is such a long slow process, and progress seems particularly slow and hard in the early stages but if you just keep on ticking off the sessions and doing the work the results inevitably come.
While talking to athletes and during my own training over the last few weeks one golden rule has come up again and again. In my mind it’s probably the most important rule to make all training decisions by. It’s certainly one Ais has driven home again and again.
This was one of the best weeks training I’ve had in years, certainly the best since I’ve been back Ironman training this time around. I’ve been addressing specific issues like bike strength and I’ve also been adding quality runs to the mix so the volume and intensity combine to make it a hard but very satisfying week.
Training wise things really fall apart this week and I end up with the worst week since January. On the plus side though I make some excellent progress with sorting out the back and the nerve problems. I’m working with two of the best Physio’s I’ve found anywhere. I’m still struggling with the training and extremely low energy levels. We are fairly certain that I’m allergic to the dog and if it comes down to a him or me I’m not too sure which way that vote will go… Read on for the week in training, such as it was.
Things start to unravel at the start of the week forcing a change of plan. Trying to balance the training, work and life can sometimes prove a bit tricky.
Swim volume: An experiment. How I took a minute off my 1000 meter time trial in 2 weeks.
After yesterdays lounging around it’s back to work and although the heatings fixed in the pool it’s not quite as warm as the first couple of swims. I managed 3550m before shivering my way to the hot showers.

Ok so a very slow swimming boss but I’m still on track. The day started with a 2.9k swim. I was aiming for 3k but lost count and it was only during breakfast that I realised I was short.
